British Air Force Typhoon jets have operated alongside France's air force in a combined operation against an subterranean weapons facility in Syrian territory used by the Daesh militant organization, as stated by the British defence ministry.

The facility, pinpointed through reconnaissance, was assessed as housing weapons and explosive materials, the statement said, and was situated in mountainous terrain just above the ancient city of Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"The RAF jets used precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to hit a several access tunnels providing entry to the facility... initial indications indicate the target was engaged successfully," the MoD said.

There was no evidence of any harm to civilians in the strike late on Saturday and every plane involved returned safely, the defence officials confirmed.

The British jets were backed up by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.

IS - referred to as the so-called Islamic State - enforced extremist governance over significant areas in both Syria and Iraq until 2019.

"This action demonstrates our UK leadership, and determination to work closely with our allies, to stamp out any re-emergence of the terrorist group and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the Middle East," the British Defence Secretary the Defence Secretary remarked.

British military aircraft have carried out surveillance missions over Syria to "deter any attempted resurgence" of the group subsequent to its military defeat at the Baghuz confrontation in the year 2019, the MoD reported.

"I extend gratitude to the personnel of our armed forces who took part in this mission for their professionalism and their bravery," he added. "They were part of thousands of British troops deployed over Christmas and New Year. This action, to remove dangerous terrorists who pose a risk to our safety, demonstrates how our armed forces are prepared to act, all year round, protecting the UK domestically and influential overseas."

Last December, the United States armed forces carried out what it described as a "large-scale strike" against IS targets in Syria, subsequent to an ambush resulted in the deaths of two US troops and a local interpreter in Palmyra.

The U.N. estimates Daesh still has between 5,000 and 7,000 combatants in Syria and Iraq.
