The Iconic Puzzle Game Didn't Triumph at This Gaming Ceremony — Another Award Type Could Fix That

As any major prize-giving event approaches, you'll find a demand for introducing of new categories to recognize overlooked contributions and fill the hearts of enthusiasts dedicated to specific genres.

Another commentator previously argued advocating for terror-themed awards. That would rule. Equally deserving are board games, which is someone's personal cause. But they will have to forgive me if I try to elbow in front just as with other single-minded supporters, there's a strong justification backing this proposal remains most pressing above others. Here's the proposal: We need a category for puzzle games.

The Genre Classification Challenge

Categorizing art by genre defies precise measurement; it remains highly personal, and it will always spark debates concluding with vague boundaries. It's understandable that movie academies don’t do it. But it is an essential concession in the world of video games, which are so diverse they barely qualify as a single art form.

For the full spectrum of interactive entertainment excellence to receive acknowledgment, and for games of all stripes to have a chance for representation, specific award classifications remain vital.

Current Gaming Award Categories

The major gaming awards currently feature award types recognizing Action, Adventure-action titles, RPG experiences, Combat games, Sim/Strategy, and Sports/Racing games. Collectively, these classifications successfully include numerous genres, and you can find room for numerous titles.

This doesn't apply to logic-based experiences. No suitable classification appears to put them. Think about these this year’s best games, all very different: structural challenges in a particular game, fast-paced pattern recognition from another release, and the sweetly sociological logic puzzles from additional release. What category would fit them between these six categories? Simply put, no category fits.

The Representation Problem

Many instances occur excellent brain-teasers launched regularly that have no home in entertainment awards, if they accidentally match award groups including Handheld titles, VR/AR Game, and the highly challenging small studio competitions.

  • An iconic brain-teaser got overlooked completely in 2014
  • Another imaginative release received no nominations in 2019
  • Popular arranging title got ignored in 2021
  • Only a few brain-teasers scraped into independent or mobile categories

Significance of Puzzle Games

These are often small games, yet the craft of the puzzle game holds tremendous importance. Famous handheld logic titles rank among most engaged experiences worldwide continuing this trend for an extended period.

The legendary block-stacking game rivals well-known building titles for the title of best-selling game of all time; it also contends for best game of all time. Puzzle games are foundational to the art of video games, and engaging with almost every other genre.

Proposal and Rationale

Puzzle games wouldn’t have this problem. One could readily select a field of five with fascinating, diverse, deserving games annually without trouble — or rather, with difficulty, since numerous excellent numerous deserving experiences.

Restating the point, these represent titles that otherwise have no home during prominent ceremonies. Puzzle game makers function at the challenging frontier of video game design, producing among most fundamental forms of gaming itself. Comparable to movie stunt professionals, they merit acknowledgment. Let’s not keep them waiting decades.
